Emily.
I collapsed before I even realized my knees had given way.
"It's me, Dad."
I hugged her.
"I never stopped loving you."
She cried even more.
"They told me you didn't want me anymore."
Emily finally explained everything.
After our discussion, she called her grandparents.
They found her and convinced her to spend the night with them.
The next morning, they lied.
They claimed that the search had become so intense that her return would only cause everyone to hate her.
So they took her to the home of relatives in another state.
Using old family documents and Abigail's maiden name, they enrolled Emily in a new school under a different identity.
Whenever Emily wanted to contact me, they insisted that I had already moved on from the matter.
When they saw that I had adopted Nora, they only showed Emily the court photo.
Not the caption explaining that I was simply giving an orphan a home.
Emily believed I had replaced her.
Nora revealed another painful truth.
Her grandparents threatened her.
Grant warned that no one would believe an orphan more than respected adults.
If she told anyone what she saw, I would lose her too.
Terrified, she remained silent.
For ten years.
The following morning, I contacted the sheriff, my lawyer, and my brother.
At the memorial service for Emily, I entered the hall with my two daughters by my side.
Silence filled the room.
Emily's grandparents ran towards her.
She positioned herself behind me.
"You are letting this city blame a child," I told them.
"You stole my daughter and destroyed two innocent lives."
Emily confirmed every word.
