In some cases, vertical ridges may be related to nutritional factors such as low iron or B vitamin intake. A balanced diet, adequate hydration, and good overall health habits can promote stronger, smoother nail growth, although the presence of mild ridges is not usually a cause for concern.
Horizontal lines, known as Beau's lines, are less common and can indicate a temporary interruption in nail growth. This can occur after illness, physical stress, or significant bodily changes that temporarily slow nail production.
These horizontal ridges can also appear after nail injuries or repeated exposure to harsh chemicals. Because nails grow slowly, these lines may reflect events that occurred weeks or even months earlier.
Observing when these changes appear can sometimes help identify stressors or pre-existing health problems. However, nail changes alone do not constitute a diagnosis and should be considered in conjunction with other symptoms and overall health.
